The Titan Partnership recently trialled our Virtual Work Experience Placement, which aims to pair students from our Access To Employment (Traineeship) Programme, with an employer via a virtual work placement so they can continue to gain experience in the world of work, despite the barriers the pandemic has caused. Titan agreed to supporting our students, and have kindly left a review to inspire other Employers to get involved.
"When first approached by GFT asking Titan to pilot an eight-week virtual (remote) work experience placement, for their employability students, we were excited but slightly daunted by the fact that we had never done this before. The challenge was to make the placement interesting and worthwhile, with no face-to-face contact with our student due to the restrictions. However, with careful planning and regular meetings we were able to agree a format of how the placement should look and ensure it was a meaningful work experience for the student.
We wanted the placement to be more than simply a series of online tasks; the aim was to ensure the student had a real experience of a working environment, albeit from home. In a similar way to how many of us have adapted to working from home, the student was able to learn new administrative skills, carry out tasks and assignments and be an active part of the Titan team. Working towards units from a level 2 qualification, the student was able to undertake tasks such as setting up Zoom calls, taking minutes of meetings, contacting schools and partners by email and phone, and completing research assignments, with the main aim of completing work by deadlines, communicating with different levels of colleagues, and proving the behaviours required in the workplace.
The experience was a learning curve for us all, but we learned that an effective work experience can take place virtually, enabling the student to learn and develop through effective one to one support."
