The Importance of Fire Safety In The Workplace

May 27, 2022, 9:36 a.m.
Everybody is responsible for ensuring the workplace is a safe environment, this includes taking responsibility to prevent the risk of fires. Having every member of your team aware of fire safety can save lives, and ensuring that everyone is prepared if an incident does occur can have a huge impact on the outcome of a fire.

As a business, you are responsible for ensuring that your workplace meets all the required health and safety standards. Ensuring that your work environment complies with all regulations, to protect your employees is crucial no matter what your business does. All buildings in England and Wales must comply with The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

A fire risk assessment must always be carried out by the person responsible, with a written record of it kept if the business employs five or more people. The following steps are included in a fire assessment:

1. Identify the potential fire hazards
2. Identify the people at risk
3. Act on the findings
4. Record
5. Review

It is also crucial that fire detection and suppression systems are fully functional in your building. This means ensuring your equipment is properly installed, tested and maintained for safe use in the event of a fire. Detection and suppression systems include:

- Fire Alarms
- Fire Suppression Systems (Using dry chemicals or wet agents)
- Fire Extinguishers and Signage

In addition, every business should have designated individuals who are trained to be a Fire Marshal or Warden. These individuals will ensure safe evacuation of everyone on the premises in a fire emergency.
