5 Skills You'll Learn On Our Access To Sport Programme

April 29, 2022, 10:52 a.m.
In May 2022, we’ll be launching our new and improved Access To Sport Programme at the Goals Soccer Centre in Perry Barr. Our Access To Sport Programme aims to support young people ages 16 to 18 (19 to 24 with an EHCP), into the working world in the Sports industry. Our programme has been designed to support young people with personal and social development, key employability skills, maths and english sessions, sports coaching skills and a valuable industry placement. For students who are passionate about sports, and looking to further their career, this programme is a fantastic opportunity to be guided into the world of work by sports coaching professionals.

Below, our team has shared 5 skills you’ll be guaranteed to learn on our Access To Sport Programme...

Firstly, this programme will install self-confidence, independence and social development into all participants. Through guided sessions and activities, all students will be encouraged to step outside their comfort zone, interact with others and push themselves to achieve their set goals. At the start of the programme, students will be prompted to reflect on any barriers to learning or employment that they feel they’ve faced; working alongside our team of coaches, they’ll then have the guided support to overcome these barriers throughout future sessions.

Next, a key part of our Access To Sport Programme is the focus on employability skills. By the end of the 10 week induction, all students should present the relevant skills, attitudes and behaviours of an employable individual. Sessions such as career planning, CV writing, interview techniques and team building will ensure that students are ready to enter the working environment, with the required skill set that employers are expecting.

Alongside personal development and employability, all students will have the opportunity to develop upon their maths and English knowledge, by completing integrated Functional Skill sessions which are tailored to each individual's academic ability. We believe maths and English qualifications are a key component to supporting students into work, which is why regular sessions with academic tutors are embedded into this course.

For students that are passionate about sport, and want to pursue a career within the sports industry, we have designed activity based sessions which teach all students modules from the 1st4sports multiskills certificate. This aims to teach learners the principles of coaching fundamental movement skills and sport specific skills via the planning, delivery and review of a series of linked and progressive coaching sessions.

Finally, all students will have the opportunity to enter the real working world through an industry placement. This is run similar to how real life job training and a job interview would, to support each student with gaining the relevant skills and experience that will be expected when entering the real world of work. We work with some of the biggest sports coaching companies within Birmingham, who have supported a range of our students with gaining further experience following completion of their programme. Placements include working alongside the teams at Goals Soccer Centre, as well as various Sports Coaching companies that work within Primary Schools and Holiday Camps.
